CUSTOM ORTHOTICS IN MISSISSAUGA, ETOBICOKE, OAKVILLE & BURLINGTON
At PhysioNow, we are pleased to offer Custom Orthotics Services. Using Custom Orthotics can decrease your pain and improve your comfort levels. As most of us are on our feet so much throughout the day, it is important that we take good care of them. Imbalances starting from the bottom may cause compensations in other areas of the body. Our Custom Orthotics are fit by our Registered Physiotherapists and are made with respect to each patient’s unique needs and current issues.
Custom orthotics are assistive devices that can be added into your footwear to provide support. The size and shape can be modified depending on the type of footwear whether it is a dress shoe, running shoe, or a boot. They can be helpful with managing different conditions not just with the feet, but the ankles, knees, hips, and back as well. They are designed to match your foot, the level of support you need, correct posture, and promote better alignment in the lower body. Some people may have several different pairs with varying levels of support, tailored to the type of activity they are doing ie. daily life vs athletic activities.
WHAT IS INCLUDED IN THE CUSTOM ORTHOTICS SERVICES?
- Comprehensive assessment: The Physiotherapist will assess the alignment of your feet in different positions and movements. For example, standing, walking, squatting and more. Ultimately, this lets your Physiotherapist determine the cause of your issue, and which type of orthotic best suits you.
- Custom fitting: With the help of your Physiotherapist, they will take a mold of your foot. Using a foam block like shown in the image, the foot will be pressed in to create the mold. Thus, the orthotic can be shaped exactly to your foot. Afterwards, specifications can be indicated on the orthotics form including level of cushion, types of support, and more.
- Physiotherapy: Our Custom Orthotics are usually prescribed from a Physiotherapist during the course of a Physiotherapy Treatment session. Physiotherapy will help to strengthen, stretch and mobilize any joints and tissues that are contributing to the issue.
- Easy pickup and adjustments: The fittings, ordering, and any modifications needed are all done at PhysioNow, all you have to do is show up! Any necessary alterations to the fit of the orthotics will be coordinated by your Physiotherapist.
- Covered by insurance: Many of the top insurance providers have coverage for Custom Orthotics prescribed by a Physiotherapist.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT ORTHOTICS
How do I know if I need custom orthotics?
If you are experiencing any form of lower back, hip, knee, ankle, heel, arch or toe pain, custom orthotics may be helpful for you. Additionally, if you have abnormal foot posture (flat feet), an uneven gait, and/or pain, discomfort, or fatigue from being on your feet, orthotics may be helpful for you. Alternatively, some people choose to wear orthotics solely for prevention, comfort, and support even if they are not experiencing pain.
What is the difference between custom and store-bought orthotics?
Store-bought orthotics may help provide some relief and support but they are not designed to fit your foot or specific needs. The custom orthotics are created from a mold of your foot and after a thorough assessment of your walking patterns. Additionally, your Physiotherapist will watch your movements with the orthotics on to ensure they are addressing the issue they were created to resolve. Ultimately, this ensures that the custom orthotics are more effective and better for long term resolution.
Do I have to break my orthotics in?
Some people find that their custom orthotics are uncomfortable to wear at first, and may only be able to handle them for a couple hours at first. Additionally, it depends on your initial foot posture and the level of support the orthotic is giving to you. Generally, it is recommended that you gradually increase the amount of wearing time, especially if you have not worn orthotics before.
What shoes do I wear with my custom orthotics?
Your orthotics should be able to fit inside most footwear including boots, dress shoes, and running shoes. You can move your orthotics from shoe to shoe to ensure that your feet are always supported. If you are looking for orthotics for much smaller shoe types, your Physiotherapist can help you shape the orthotics or discuss specialized pairs designed to fit in these smaller shoes.
