HIP PAIN TREATMENT in Mississauga, Etobicoke, Oakville & Burlington Demo

Hip ExerciseAre you experiencing hip pain when you walk, run or exercise? Is your hip hurting when you sleep or turn in bed? Is it causing you to limp when you walk? Does your hip hurt when you rise from sitting? Have you had a hip joint replacement?

Hip Pain is a very common issue that we see in our clinics! The causes of hip pain are varied and affect people of all ages. Some of the most common causes are as follows:

Common Causes of Hip Pain

Registered Physiotherapy TreatmentsHip Fracture Treatment1. Hip Bursitis: There is a bursa that is located between the large bone in your hip and the muscles that cover the bone. Occasionally, it can become inflamed and cause aching pain when sitting, rising from sitting or lying on the affected side. It is often aggravated by excessive walking.

2. Arthritis: Wear and tear on the hip joints can cause arthritis over time that causes pain and aching with movement and almost all weight-bearing activities. The range of Movement of the hip joint is affected by arthritis. In the early to moderate stages of arthritis, physiotherapy treatment can be very effective at restoring movement to the joint, reducing pain, and increasing overall strength.

3. If the arthritis is very advanced, eventually a hip joint replacement may be recommended by the surgeon. Our therapists are trained to identify the source of this pain and the likely stage of arthritis. They will evaluate any diagnostic tests that you have had and discuss the results with you. They will make recommendations to you regarding the best path of treatment for you based on your individual injury. We offer pre and post surgery physiotherapy treatment for the hips.

4. Muscle sprains and strains: Common areas around the hip that may be injured include the hip flexors, the glutes, the hamstrings, or the adductors (inner thigh/groin muscles). As with any other muscle strain, they need to be rehabilitated properly to return to full strength and prevent future injuries.

5. Fracture: Our therapists are fully trained to assist you with your recovery from a hip fracture. They will closely follow your surgeon’s advice and facilitate a timely recovery from your injury. The physiotherapists can also give you advice to set up your home with assistive devices and gait aids while you are recovering.

Hip Joint Replacement Treatments6. Hip joint replacement: It is very important to work with a knowledgeable physiotherapist after receiving a hip joint replacement. We work collaboratively with your surgeon to facilitate a timely return to your normal activities of daily living. Physiotherapy can start immediately after surgery, and it is recommended within a couple of days to have an appointment with an outpatient physiotherapist. Please call the office to make an appointment as soon as this surgery has been done or is scheduled. Ideally, we would assess you before the hip replacement has been done, and continue afterwards once you are cleared for physiotherapy.

7. Femoracetabular Impingement (FAI) or a pinching hip: This condition is reported as a pinching sensation at the hip with different movements. It is caused by abnormal contact between the 2 bones in the joint (the femoral head and the socket of the pelvis) during movement. This can happen for several reasons: a structural abnormality in the joint, hip muscle weakness or restricted range in the hip.

The list above is not exhaustive as there are many other possible sources of hip pain. Hip pain may also be referred from the back. Our therapists are trained to fully assess the causes of your hip pain and treat it in the most effective way possible. We have helped thousands of patients to get back to their lives after hip pain. We can help you too!

Physiotherapy for Hip PainMassage Therapy Treatments

Physiotherapy is vital for the management of hip pain, whether it is due to a sports injury, post-surgery, or overuse over time.

Problems with the hips should not be left to worsen over time. Eventually, they can lead to pain or dysfunction in other areas, including the lower back, knee, ankles, and feet. When the hips are not functioning well, the other areas have to make up for it.

During a physiotherapy session, your Registered Physiotherapist will perform a detailed assessment of your hip and how it functions. This may include how you walk, climb stairs, bend, jump, and more. They will check your strength and range of motion of the entire lower body. This will allow them to put together a working diagnosis and create an individualized plan for your recovery. This plan may include:

Frequently Asked Questions:

What causes hip pain?

Hip pain can come from the joint or the soft tissues. Common conditions include muscle or labral tears, sprains, strains, fractures, arthritis, or bursitis. Seek help from a physiotherapist if you have decreased mobility, function and pain to determine the source of the issue.

What treatment helps hip pain?

Physiotherapy and massage therapy are effective for recovery from hip pain. Techniques include soft tissue massage, manual therapy, range of motion and strengthening exercises, a progressive home program and modalities. PhysioNow offers services from a highly trained team of healthcare professionals to help you recover your mobility, strength, and return to your normal activities.

Is it better to rest or exercise with hip pain?

It depends on the condition and the stage of recovery you are in. For most acute conditions, there will be a brief period of rest followed with tailored exercises from your physiotherapist to slowly strengthen and mobilize your hip. You may be asked to stay away or limit certain activities while performing your specialized rehab plan to allow your hip to rest.

What should I avoid with hip pain?

Most people find that sleeping or lying on the affected side is quite painful and should try to stay away from it. Other aggravating activities may include long periods of sitting or resting, or excessive bending and pressure on the hip. However, each case of hip pain is different.

What if I just had a hip surgery?

PhysioNow is highly qualified to take patients after a surgery as long as you have been cleared for physiotherapy by your surgeon. We also work with hospitals to see patients after hip replacement surgeries. We will help you understand your safety precautions and post-surgical protocols and work with you to recover your strength and mobility.
